Earlier this year I complained that sci-fi movies were going down hill. Well, with the release of Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 I am prepared to rescind that statement, provided the rest of the year is just as good.

Following the events of the original films, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is once again saving worlds and just hanging out with his team of misfits and genetically trash pandas. Following a disastrous crash resulting in the destruction of his own Millennium Falcon, he meets Ego (Kurt Russel) a man claiming to be his father. The team divides, Quill, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista) and the newly introduced Mantis (Pom Klementieff) travel back to Ego's planet while Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) and their prisoner Nebula (Karen Gillan) stay behind to repair the ship. But when the space pirate ravagers, lead by Michael Rooker's enigmatic Yandu, and the golden people of Sovereign set out to capture or heroes the stage is set for a space adventure like no other.
Guardians Of The Galaxy was funny, colourful and action packed. Vol. 2 is all that on a whole new level. The colours are brighter, the action is better and the jokes come thick and fast. And while the original was lacking in both the villain and character department, the sequel uses that film as a launchpad to produce the best movie in the MCU. While it does have a number of small issues endemic to it's universe it is undeniably one of the most enjoyable, comedic, action packed movies to date.
Let's start with the problems cause there are less of those. Stakes, there are none. It's been known for sometime that the Guardians would be appearing in the upcoming Infinity War saga as well as the recently announced third film in the series so every time Starlord comes close to death or our heroes are seemingly trapped, we know their survival is inevitable. It's also going to confuse anyone who hasn't seen the original as any character development is building on top of pre-established content, thus isn't as good as it could have been. That's it. If you can get past those tiny issues, and it isn't hard to, you're gonna have a good time.
Guardians Vol. 2 is funny. Like, really funny. The opening credits are funny. The serious scenes are funny. The action is explosive with what I shall call "The Arrow Scene" being the standout. The characters you loved from the original are back and even better. Drax steals the show and Dave Bautista brings a surprising amount of depth to the character. Nebula returns and gets some actual development here, possibly setting the stage for Infinity War. Starlord's story continues it's arc of developing him into more of a roguish a-hole and everyone else is pretty damn entertaining. It's also worth pointing out that the MCU know has a genuinely good villain, and it's about damn time. Good job Tazerface (this is a joke).

Is Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 worth seeing? One question. Do you enjoy fun? If so, what are you waiting for? It's the best movie in the MCU, one of the best sci-fi movies in the past twenty years and is just an all around blast to watch.
