Can an obscure Marvel team of intergalactic aliens, a sentient tree, a talking raccoon and not Han Solo make the same waves that the more popular heroes made? Yes, yes they can.

Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is hired to find a mysterious orb, one that holds a weapon capable of destroying entire planets. But he's not the only one after it. Ronan (Lee Pace), warlord of an alien race known as the Kree, wants the weapon for himself and so dispatches his lieutenant Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to find it. When an altercation involving Quill, Gamora, bounty hunters Rocket the Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot the tree (Vin Diesel) ends up with all four locked in a maximum security space prison it seems like the film is over. Oddly enough, it isn't. Teaming up with Drax (Dave Bautista) a vengeful alien that takes things far too literally they escape and proceed to tear apart the galaxy in an effort to save it from obliteration.
What begins as a serious, dark movie quickly drops the facade of grimness to reveal on of the funniest science fiction films to date. It's the best space opera since the original Star Wars trilogy and it's clearly inspired by those same movies. Groot is Chewbacca, big, strong and with limited vocal range. Peter Quill is Han Solo, smooth, cool, has his own spaceship. A group of misfits, one of whose father is mysteriously unknown, team up to do battle with an intergalactic empire that wants nothing more than to wipe out a group of people with a planet destroying weapon.
It's the same but it's also very different. For one, it's funnier and a hell of a lot more stylish. Between the 80's music, bizarre aliens and vibrant colours, there isn't much else like it. It's also got some great characters. The main cast are wholly entertaining, Drax and Groot being the most memorable of the group. The action is equal parts explosive and imaginative with some of the best space battles around. Add some excellent writing and you've got yourself and damn good adventure.

It's the best movie Marvel's ever made. If you haven't seen it, well, what are you waiting for? Guardians of the Galaxy is hands down the most entertaining sci-fi film in years. It's funny, clever and action packed , hears hoping the sequel is just as good.
