Review: Searching Will Keep You Guessing Till The End

Down the rabbit hole we go. Where we'll end up? Nobody knows.

David Kim (John Cho) wakes one morning to a handful of missed calls and an absence of text messages from his daughter Margot (Michelle La). At first, he thinks little of it but, as days pass, it becomes apparent that Margot is missing. Cue an intense investigation told entirely through phone calls, Facebook, email and everything else you might think, an investigation that lead...somewhere.

This will be a short review. Watch Searching. Go in knowing as little as possible and enjoy what may be 2018's best thriller, all told through computer screens. What at first may seem like a gimmick soon becomes an integral part of the film. We know only as much as we see, as much as David knows. We experience everything he experiences in the search for his daughter. It keeps things tight, contained, keeps you guessing throughout.

John Cho is excellent in what is easily his best performance, especially when considering he is almost exclusively reacting through low resolution webcam footage. He captures all the emotions one expects, effectively funneling them toward the viewer.

Admittedly not perfect, Searching is the kind of movie that, once it gets going, pulls you in. Before long you'll be trying to keep up with a story that unfolds at a tremendous pace, all the while trying to solve the mystery for yourself. Definitely worth your time.
