Review: Red Sparrow Is A More Boring, More Awful, Atomic Blonde

This years female led, cold war styled, spy thriller comes in the form of Red Sparrow, a completely uninteresting, uninspiring, unexciting film that has no reason to exist.

After witnessing a government assassination, Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) is given a choice. Become a sparrow or die. She chooses the former. Following a training montage she is given her first mission, seduce CIA agent Nathaniel Nash (Joel Edgerton) and extract the name of a high ranking double agent. Thus we have our movie, and god is it dull.
There's nothing to like here. Nothing. The acting awkward and cold, as are the characters, the plot is barely there and seems to exist only to deliver pain and suffering upon Lawrence, and give a mildly satisfying, if totally irrelevant, payoff at the end. The action is, well, there is none.

Half an hour in I felt like I had sat through at least three times that. By the time the end credits rolled I was having difficulty staying awake. It was 7pm at the time. So no, don't watch Red Sparrow. If you want to watch a female led spy thriller, there's plenty more options, many of which are far better.
