Review: Game Night Is Surprisingly Enjoyable

I'm not a big fan of comedy films. However, every now and again, something good comes along.

Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) are dedicated to their weekly game nights. Charades, Life, Monopoly, they love it all. When Max's successful brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) returns to town he invites his brother and the game night regulars over for a special event. He has hired a company to enact a kidnapping, one the group must solve in order to win. But, as you might expect, things go hilariously wrong.

Game Night isn't perfect. There are running jokes that are painfully unfunny, although there is one decent one. One of the characters is absurdly annoying to the point of hatred and there's a couple of very obvious twists. But these are easy to overlook amidst an admittedly clever plot, some well written characters, decent jokes and some unexpectedly good action.

It's not often I find myself openly laughing in the cinema, although there are a few exceptions, and Game Night is one of them. Seamlessly flip-flopping between quality humour being a decent thriller, there really isn't any reason not to see this movie.
