Review: The Post...Academy Award The Movie

Between its director, Steven Spielberg, and its leads, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, there are a combined 8 Oscars won and an additional 30 nominations. So yeah, I got pretty much what I expected.

A disgruntled government employee steals thousands of documents relating to the Vietnam situation. From the build up in the forties to the continuing war, right up until the 70s, and now they're giving them to the press. When these papers fall into the hands of editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks) and publisher Kay Graham (Streep), they must make a choice. Release the documents to the public, risking prosecution and prison time, or hide them away, preserving their jobs and the company. It's not an easy decision to make.

Like almost everything Spielberg touches, The Post is an excellently made film with some great acting to boot. But it's also not much more than that. Not to belittle what really quite a good movie, one that you should watch at some point in time, but it feels like Spielberg has hit a plateau. There's nothing with that, Bridge Of Spies, Lincoln and War Horse were all solid films, but ultimately forgettable. One could make the argument that every Spielberg film like The Post is good, but they're all very much the same.

But hey, Hanks and Streep are great, as are the rest of the cast. The cinematography is on point and the story is gripping. But in a world where everything is good, everything is kind of boring as well.

The Post is an easy recommendation, it really is. I just hope Spielberg moves back to his more adventurous roots in the coming years.
