Review: Non-Stop...Taken On A Plane

Following the release of action classic Die Hard, there came a slew of films that were best described as “Die Hard on a…”. Speed was “Die Hard on a a bus”. Under Siege, “Die Hard on a boat”. Cliffhanger, “Die Hard on a mountain”. So, naturally, with the release of Taken, Liam Neeson’s following work took on the trait. Taken with wolves, Taken with a team, and, well, this one.

Bill Marks (Neeson) is a US air marshal, flying from New York to London. It should be a routine trip, and at first, it. That is until Marks receives a message from an anonymous source. Deposit $150 million into a secret account or someone will start killing passengers. Suspects are everywhere and at 39000 feet, there can be no mistakes.

In concept, Non-Stop should be a no brainer. It has all the right ingredients. A great lead, a sound story and a solid director should create an entertaining thriller. And for about two thirds of the film, it is. Neeson is great, the story moves along at a solid pace and things are never boring. But it’s about the point that the entire crew turns on Marks that things fall apart. We know he’s not the enemy, and there isn’t enough to warrant their reaction. While the film does a decent enough job to convince you of the why, it’s not enough.

And that’s really all there is to it. Non-Stop isn’t going to blow you away, but it doesn’t overstay its welcome. The first two acts are solid and the last is decent. It’s a little messy here and there but ultimately, it’s a good time.
