Best And Worst Films Of 2017

2017 has certainly been an interesting year. A year filled with instant classics and painful disappointments. We got some of the best action in years, great comedy and two of the single greatest superhero films around. But for every good movie, there was a bad. For every Wind River, a Transformers, for every John Wick 2, an American Assassin. So lets take a look back at the best, and the worst, of 2017.

Dishonourable Mentions
Worst
Fate Of The Furious
It's big, loud and totally unnecessary. The 8th film in Vin Diesel's car driven franchise was its most outlandish, its most expensive and its worst. But hey, it secured a Jason Statham/Dwayne Johnson starring spin-off so it wasn't all for nothing.

Assassin's Creed
Assassin's Creed's biggest crime was the way in which it squandered its potential. Built from a franchise spanning thousands of years of history, the creators had both the ability, and the talent, the create something great. Instead we got this.

Pirates Of The Caribbean On Stranger Tides
Desperately trying to breathe live into a dead franchise, the 5th Pirates film failed to deliver on almost every note. It's overly long, obtusely stupid and somehow cost over $300 million to make. I don't know where the money went, but it wasn't spent wisely.

The Dark Tower
Adapted from Stephen King's best selling series, The Dark Tower, much like the afore mentioned Assassin's Creed, is a case of wasted potential. However, unlike Ubisoft's time jumping adventure, The Dark Tower is devoid of any entertainment value whatsoever.

Suburbicon
What happened? No one will know. All we know is that the end result is a poorly directed, shoddily written, crappy excuse for a film. Some might poke it with a stick, but I don't think there's a stick long enough for me.

Honourable Mentions
Best
IT
Where The Dark Tower utterly failed, IT excelled. Nailing everything from the atmosphere to the characters, IT is both creepy and funny, spooky and enjoyable. It may not be the best horror movie ever made but it's a lot of fun all the same.

The Foreigner
Take Jackie Chan and throw him into a Bourne style thriller with a sprinkling of Rambo and what do you get? A thoroughly entertaining film. Delivering action, thrills and one of Chan's best performances.

Thor Ragnarok
Who would have thought that the third film from Marvel's blandest character would wind up being the most enjoyable film the studio has ever produced? Not me. And yet Taika Waititi breathed life into a world no one cared for with little more than some small risks and a talking pile of rocks.

Logan
After almost 20 years playing the now iconic Wolverine, Hugh Jackman, along with Sir Patrick Stewart, gave the finest performances superhero cinema has ever seen, in one of the best films around. A movie that works on every level, it's the perfect ending to a story coming to its inevitable end.

War For The Planet Of The Apes
Of all the big science fiction sequels of 2017, War For The Planet Of The Apes was the one I was most excited for. While it wasn't perfect, and the name is more than a little misleading, it delivered an emotionally satisfying conclusion to what is one of the best film trilogies around.
