Review: Geostorm, How Dumb Do You Like Your Fun?

You know those movies that aren't really that good? The ones that aren't exactly bad either? The kind of movie you watch on a Sunday afternoon as a distraction. This is that kind of movie.

In the near future, global warming cause extreme weather events across the planet. Enter Jake (Gerard Butler), the creator of DutchBoy, a satellite system that, in layman's terms, controls the weather. Cut to several years later, he's been cut from the project by Max (Jim Sturgess) his brother and, naturally, they need him back after a series of bizarre weather events and deaths occur. Queue a disaster conspiracy film that we won't see the likes of again, at least not any time soon.
There's not a lot to say about Geostorm, and Geostorm doesn't have a lot to say. But as a vessel for some of the best disaster cinema since The Day After Tomorrow, it's pretty fun. The acting is, well, Gerard Butler, though Andy Garcia and Ed Harris show up, out acting the rest of the film in maybe the hammiest 10 minutes of their careers. But this is a spectacle film, not an Oscar attempt.

And, if nothing else, it delivers on that. Ice tsunamis in Rio, lightning storms reminiscent of a Tesla coil in Florida and more, bring sufficient wow moments to make Geostorm watchable. So yeah, check it out. Maybe not in the cinema, and don't in expecting much. It's an easy watch that doesn't require much attention to entertain.
