Review: mother! Is An Overstuffed Mess

I've seen some strange movies in my time, but nothing quite like mother!. It's possibly the least comprehensible film I've ever seen, namely because it doesn't attempt to have a shred of reason. Don't get me wrong, I don't want my plots spoon-fed to me, but seriously, this one isn't even trying.

There's a woman (Jennifer Lawrence) and a man (Javier Bardem). They don't have names. He's a writer, she does nothing. One day a man played by Ed Harris shows up at their House. The next day a woman played by Michelle Pfieffer shows up at their house. Things quickly get out of hand, there's a war, what amounts to the apocalypse, a bleeding hole in the floor and the rebirth of the world, all because some dude wrote a poem which we never see or hear.

I'm certain that the purpose of mother! will be discussed. Is it about love? The artists desire for praise? The absurd dedication of fans? Is their something biblical (Yes, yes it is)? Whatever it is, the movie doesn't attempt to give itself a reason and it is for this, that it cannot be praised. While the last half of the film is somewhat interesting, and there's good visuals throughout, as well as some solid acting, mother! leaves it up to the audience to get anything out of it.

It's not particularly entertaining, the characters aren't exactly engaging, the escalation of events makes no sense whatsoever and, by the time the credits roll, it has SPOILER WARNING literally started again, meaning the last 2 hours was utterly meaningless. And while this could have been an interesting twist, it's not only the last thing you see, but also the first.

Save your money, save your time, don't see mother! Maybe watch it on Netflix or whatever your preferred digital/physical viewing platform is. The film has more ideas than it knows what to do with, and you shouldn't have to do the hard work for it.
