Review: Logan Lucky Is Ocean's 11 With A Southern Twist

In 2001 Steven Soderbergh made his mark on crime comedy, a mark that stands strong today. I began with Ocean's 11, and its sequels, and now, the easily enjoyable Logan Lucky.

Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) finds himself on rough times following lay-offs at his work. In an effort to make a better life for himself and his daughter, he teams up with his brother Clyde (Adam Driver), a one armed bartender, and a currently incarcerated Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) to crack a vault at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, during the biggest event of the year.

While not as tightly directed or cleanly written as Ocean's 11, Logan Lucky is yet another solid entry to this years stylised crime films. Tatum, Driver and Craig are excellent with Driver stealing almost every scene in his strangely reserved yet deeply humorous character. There's a smattering of surprising cameos which don't feel forced, more than I can say for a certain cinematic franchise.

Of course, the meat of the project is the crime itself and, in true Soderbergh fashion, everything is wrapped up with a neat little bow in a manner describable only as excellent. The way in which he brings together the various elements following the heist is as good as it gets. Again, it isn't as well done as the justly lauded Ocean's 11, there's a lot of fun to be had.

Logan Lucky is a rollercoaster of a movie, but it's a rollercoaster than only goes up. Great characters, a twisty turny plot and some genuine laughs makes for one of this years better films. While it isn't necessarily cinema worthy, keep this one on your radar.
