Review: Conan The Barbarian Is The Definitive Fantasy Classic

In his second cinematic role, and the first time the world heard his thick Austrian accent, Arnold Schwarzenegger took on the role of Conan, Robert E. Howard's pulp fiction hero, and one of the first characters of Sword and Sorcery.

He watched as his family was slain, was helpless as he was thrown into slavery and now, after years of being forced to fight for the entertainment of others, Conan (Schwarzenegger) is free, and seeking revenge on the man who took everything from him, Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones). Forming a group of misfits and rogues, Conan slashes his way across the continent of Hyboria, crushing his enemies, driving them before him, and hearing the lamentations of the women.

Conan The Barbarian is both my favourite Schwarzenegger film and character. Featuring one of the top scores to ever accompany a movie, a great villain, stellar action and some very cool moments, the film embodies the concept of heroic fantasy. Conan is strong and fearless, an stoic pillar of strength standing against a seemingly endless torrent of attack from malevolent forces. Which of course brings us to the Vader-esque Thulsa Doom. James Earl Jones is every bit as imposing as the cult-leading sorcerer as he was as a Sith Lord, though his presence is more palpable here than it ever was in Star Wars. He devours the scenery, his voice standing distinct, even alongside that of an already distinct Schwarzenegger.

But the film is so much more than just its characters. From duels with giant serpents to battles with small armies and pots of grey slush made of human body parts. It's big and loud when it needs to but, surprisingly enough, it can quickly switch to quieter, more personal moments. Much like the films' lead, Conan The Barbarian appears brash and loud, but beneath its well muscled exterior is a far deeper film.

What is best in life? Conan is. From the incredible soundtrack to its perfect casting, the fun action and the surprisingly thoughtful moments, it truly is one of the greats.
