Top 5 Transformers Fights

With the release of the fifth, and purportedly final, entry in Michael Bay's Transformers franchise just around the corner, we must ask ourselves, what's the point? If nothing else it promises to deliver a number of robot based battles. In celebration of what might be the best mechanised fights around, here are a few of my favourite from the prior films.

Scorponok Desert Battle

Following the also excellent base attack that opens the first Transformers, we have Scorponok, a literal van sized scorpion, assaulting a number of special ops soldiers in a small Middle Eastern village. While it may not be the first encounter, it's certainly the most explosive as Scorponok launches missiles every which way. The conclusion, showing off some of humanities own firepower, is one of the most satisfying things around. It's got a killer score as well.

Starscream vs F22's

This is really the only battle in the franchise that capitalises on the transforming aspect of the Transformers. Starscream switches between his jet and robot mode as well as combining both into a short but very cool sequence.

Forest Fight

Megatron is back with a vengeance and there's only one who can stop him, Optimus Prime. The forest fight has a great sense of scale as Sam runs for shelter as the most powerful of the Transformers tear each other apart. It's visceral, brutal and better than anything else in the movie.

Optimus To The Rescue

Very much like Starscream's scene from the first Transformers, only more heroic than villainous. We finally get to see Optimus' true power as he handily dispatches a half dozen Decepticons without breaking a sweat. It has all the hallmarks of the good Michael Bay. It looks good, sounds great and is wholly entertaining.

No Prisoners, Only Trophies

This is really the only "emotional" moment in the whole franchise. As Bumblebee chatters through his radio and all seems lost, the score builds to a crescendo before it all goes to hell, quickly becoming something far more heroic. Tossing in some gorgeous slow motion, it feels like the best inevitable comeback around.
