Sometime ago director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) announced his next project, a series of shorts aired through Youtube and Steam. These shorts were being developed by Oats Studios, Neill's team of VFX artist and film creators, and the first short has just released.

Titled Rakka, the short covers a post-apocalyptic world in which a race of reptilian have all but destroyed humanity. We follow a small group of resistance fighters, led by Sigourney Weaver, as they try to, well, I don't really know. They might be trying to make an alien scared or just kill it, it isn't really clear.
If Rakka sets the bar for what we see next, I'm interested. It isn't close to being perfect and it's somewhat rough around the edges but it is a pretty cool idea with some wicked VFX work. The trailers that were released prior tease some equally bizarre content which hope is a little more clear cut.

The idea of creating film quality short films is one that appeals to me and Rakka is as good a place as any to start. But it lacks any real focus or purpose, feeling more like someone took the best parts out of feature length production. We're given very little in the way of character, story or reason as the focus seems to be more on cool visuals and concepts.

Neill has said in a number of interviews that, if shorts become popular enough, the possibility of a feature film adaptation was there. I for one am interested too see where he takes it from here but hopefully it's in a more focused, concise direction. You can check out Rakka below or on Steam.
