Review: Con Air Is One Of The Most Enjoyable Films Around

Quickly gaining infamy for Nicolas Cage's awful accent and bad hair, Con Air is not what one would call top tier film making. But for a 90's action movie from a first time director, it's more than enough fun to bring you back again and again.

Cameron Poe (Cage), an ex-army ranger, is sentenced to serve 7 years in prison after killing a man in a drunken brawl while defending his pregnant wife. Now, on the day of his release, the plane that's taking him home has been hijacked by notorious murderer Cyrus The Virus (John Malkovich). He must take a stand against the lawless lowlifes that surround him if he ever wants to get home again.
I'm not going to lie, Nicolas Cage is pretty terrible here. But isn't that why we love him? To say he's an over the top badass would be an understatement. He shrugs off bullets, dishes it out and is more than capable of spouting out one liners whenever the situation requires one. While the accent is indeed terrible, he's so entertaining that his failings are nigh on irrelevant.
The action is excellent, so much so that it remains some of the best on screen carnage to date. It's so very 90's and yet feels somewhat fresh amongst the numerous dull and repetitive action features spat out every year. Add to this an excellent cast including John Cusack, Ving Rhames and Steve Buscemi and you've got a recipe for explosive enjoyment.

Like almost all of Cage's work, Con Air isn't some award seeking, high art film. It's action at its best, some of the most enjoyable around. If you like your Cage or your action, you'll undoubtedly enjoy Con Air.
