Review: Lord Of War Is The Best Cage Has Ever Been

Arguably the best, most underrated film Nicolas Cage has ever done, Lord Of War is one of those true stories you really need to see to believe.

Yuri Orlov (Cage) is a gun runner. Any country, any firearm, anytime. If you need it, he probably has it. Assault rifles, handguns, machine guns, even tanks and helicopters, Orlov is one of the worlds largest suppliers of less than legal weapons. With weapons trades comes unsatisfactory customers and lawmen hellbent on taking you down. Over the course of his career, Orlov dealt with both, in his own manner, with his own rules.

Lord Of War isn't the most plot comprehensive movie and, much like the truth it's based on, takes a number of unexpected twists and turns. Yuri dodges disgruntled African warlords, rival arms dealers and Jack Valentine (Ethan Hawke), a determined Interpol agent, relentless in his pursuit of Orlov. While the names and situations have been adjusted slightly, it is, for the most part, close enough to the truth that it feels real.

Cage's performance is the highlight of the movie. He covers a range of emotions, encounters and unexpected outcomes. He's got all the one-liners of an action hero, the wit of a man in far more comfortable situations and is thoroughly entertaining. The fact that the movie has flown so far under the radar beggars belief.

Lord Of War is a good movie, nay, a great one. Cage is surprisingly excellent, the visuals and writing is on par with many a celebrated film and, from its opening scene to the closing credits, it'll keep you entertained throughout.
