Review: The Lost Boys, Before Vampires Sparkled

Believe it or not, Joel Shumacher, the "mastermind" behind what are arguably the worst Batman films to date, Batman Forever and Batman And Robin, once made good movies. Not only the excellent Falling Down with Michael Douglas but also the vastly entertaining vampire movie, The Lost Boys.

Sam (Corey Haim) and Michael (Jason Patric) move to the small beach town of Santa Carla, along with their mother, to move in with their slightly eccentric grandfather. The town is plagued by various gangs of all sorts, with a group of teens lead by David (Kiefer Sutherland) being the most notorious. When Sam bumps into the Frog brothers (Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander) two boys his age claiming to be vampire hunter, and Michael begins acting very strangely, it becomes apparent that something supernatural is afoot.

The Lost Boys is possibly the most 80's movie ever made. Between the glorious soundtrack to the over the top violence and more twists than any sane person would want, it oozes the decade with too many earings and not enough lighting. It's also a pretty great movie in its own right.

Kiefer Sutherland is excellent as the leader of gang, both charismatic and more than a little insane. Corey Feldman is equally solid as the more interesting of the Frog brothers, putting on a gruff voice and demeanour as the teenage vampire hunter. It's well written as well with each character being fleshed out and complete. There's a number of twists and turns throughout that keep you guessing right until the end.

The Lost Boys is funny, entertaining and embodies its era. The vampires are cruel and brutal, as they should be, and the kids hunting them are just as enjoyable to watch. Definitely check this one out.
