Review: Colossal Isn't The Movie You're Expecting.

Anne Hathaway drunkenly controls an enormous monster that is ravaging Seoul all while juggling two very different relationships. Seems like a light-hearted comedy right? Right? Wrong...

Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is kicked out by Tim (Dan Stevens), her now ex-boyfriend. He declares he'll take her back when she manages to pull herself together and sober. So she moves back to her tiny hometown, a place very much unchanged in the decade or so she's been away. Upon her return she soon finds herself passed out after a night of drinking. But that's not even the worst news. A giant monster has literally materialised in South Korea and spent the night destroying a large portion of Seoul. However, when Gloria discovers that she controls this creature, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis) and her begin a journey that will change them forever.

Colossal is an interesting movie to say the least. While it was marketed as a comedy, a funny story about Anne Hathaway drunkenly controlling a monster, that couldn't be far from the truth. I won't spoil it here but know that if you're expecting goofs, monsters and laughs, you'll get something very different, mostly anyway.

Colossal's biggest problem is its tonal issues. Moments that are dark and brooding are interrupted by very much out of place comedic events, events that aren't funny given their context and are nothing more than confusing. It also suffers from a long introductory act, one that drags one for the first quarter of the movie. While the casts acting is really good, not even they can elevate what is an other boring component.

Colossal isn't a straightforward comedy, I can't stress that enough, it's dark, mature and far more confronting than you'd imagine. But it is good, mostly. While the tone is all over the place and it tends to drag, a satisfying conclusion and some solid story telling outweigh a stupid late film reveal and some bizarre character choices.
