Review: Robin Hood Men In Tights Is A 12 Year Old's Idea Of Comedy.

Following my review of Prince Of Thieves I was directed toward Men In Tights, a parody of Robin Hood in general and Prince Of Thieves in particular. It's also my first Mel Brooks film. I've heard much praise but unfortunately I'm not 12 years old anymore.

I'm going to make this a short one because, to be honest, I found this movie about as funny as being locked up in a Turkish prison. I don't know if it was supposed to be funny, intentionally awful or just bizarre but whatever was intended, it comes off as unfunny. Calling people Achoo, mixing up sentences and throwing nonsensical modern references into medieval England is neither funny nor clever.
It watches more like a series of skits loosely strung together by what barely qualifies as a plot. The jokes are predictable at best and confusing at worst. While this type of comedy is not unknown to me, I'm a big fan of Monty Python which capitalises on its absurdity, Men In Tights fails on almost every beat. Genitalia joke stop being funny very quickly, as does the same name confusions jokes every five minutes.

It's safe to say I don't plan on watching anymore Mel Brooks films if they're anything like this. If you're between the ages of 12 and 13 you'll probably find it funny but lets be honest, calling a newt a transvestite and groping statues wasn't funny in 1993 and it isn't funny now.
