Review: JCVD is The Best Jean-Claude's Ever Been.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is an icon of B grade action movies. Standing alongside Vernon Wells, Danny Trejo, Kieth David and Steven Seagal. None of these men are known for their acting abilities but JCVD brings Jean-Claude to a new level.

Van Damme plays a fictionalised version of himself. He's out of many, his agents useless and he's locked in a custody battle with his ex. In an attempt to get away from it all, he goes home, to Brussels. But, after getting involved in a bank robbery, things begin to get far worse.
First things first, I love Jean-Claude. He's got that friendly yet cheesy demeanour that makes his characters easy to like. He's not exactly known for taking his work seriously, nor involving himself in serious projects but in JCVD he really steps it up.
He is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the best action actor around. Sure, Stallone won an Oscar for playing a mentally disabled boxer and Bruce Willis has been playing Bruce Willis for almost 40 years but when it comes down to it, none of them can carry a movie like Jean-Claude does here.

JCVD is deeper than it first appears. It has a little comedy, a little drama, plenty of jabs at Hollywood, action movies and even the man himself, as well as one of the best monologues ever put to screen. Before JCVD, the man was just a guy in action movies but now, now he has earned his recognition and my recommendation.
