A reformed gangster, fresh out of prison, struggles to reconstruct his life in his old stomping grounds. Between drugs, murder and caring for his son, the journey is not an easy one.

John Boyega, the star of Attack the Block and the new Star Wars trilogy, delivers an excellent performance as Bambi, a man just trying to make his way in the world. He's undoubtedly the biggest name in the film and he certainly delivers, though everyone else is convincing enough.

There isn't a whole lot of plot, more a series of connected events that build Bambi's character and establish the problems he deals with. And there's plenty of problems. Between a cycle of debt and work, a drug dealing uncle who's not above murder and the death of a friend, as well as trying to keep his son clear of the chaos, Bambi's road isn't an easy one.

Imperial Dreams in an introspective look at a slice of gang culture in Los Angeles. It's a deeply human tale that sits close enough to reality to make it feel tangible. While the ending is a little rushed, it's a solid watch.
