Review: xXx State of the Union Shouldn’t Exist.

State of the Union takes all the stupid fun of the original xXx and flushes it, along with anything that was previously established. It takes a completely different direction for the original and it’s severely lacking for it.

The secret xXx base is attacked by a high tech strike force. Only Gibbons (Samuel L Jackson) and Toby Shavers (Michael Roof) survive and they need help. Darius (Ice Cube) is being held in a maximum security military prison. After escaping with the aid of Gibbons and Shavers, he begins a crusade to uncover who attacked the xXx program and take them down.

From the moment xXx State of the Union begins it is clearly not the original. From high tech drones to underground facilities, it’s quickly apparent that something changed between films. While the xXx program was part of the NSA, it is now some splinter group, so much so that they cannot return to their old base due to the NSA being there. It makes no sense. They even killed Xander Cage before the movie began.

They don’t even get the enjoyable action down. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just that it’s boring. Ice Cube doesn’t have half the charisma of Diesel, is more stereotypical than he usually is and is about as interesting as a brick wall. I couldn’t tell you what notable things he did in the film, let alone anything exciting.

General George Deckert (Willem Dafoe) is the only part of the film worth watching, and that’s purely because he’s played by Willem Dafoe. How this film got a sequel, even one ten years after its release, is beyond me. Don’t even bother with this one.
