Review: Dog Soldiers is Aliens With Werewolves, and There’s Nothing Wrong With That.

A group of Royal Marines on operations in the Scottish Highlands. A family of hungry werewolves and a rogue SAS captain. It’s a recipe for disaster in the best way possible.

On a routine training operation, Sgt. Harry Wells (Sean Pertwee) and Private Cooper (Kevin Mckidd) along with the rest of their six man team, are tasked with avoiding special forces, led by Captain Ryan, (Liam Cunningham) unit, at least until everything goes wrong. As the team is hunted by the SAS, something else is hunting them, something that’s much more dangerous.

Dog Soldiers doesn’t waste any time getting to what it’s all about, soldiers duking it out with angry werewolves, and when it begins, it doesn’t let up. It’s violent, gory and, above all else, it’s a hell of a lot of fun. As werewolves square up against soldiers wielding everything from automatic weapons to frying pans, and mostly taking part within a farmhouse, it’s in your face and splattered with blood.

Sean Pertwee and Liam Cunningham are thoroughly enjoyable, clearly having fun as they chew through scenery and foe alike. Everyone else does a serviceable job, though the character of Spoon is more than a little fun.

Dog Soldiers barely qualifies as a “good” movie and it’s never going to win any awards. But if all movies were judged based on their quality, the world would be a pretty boring place. What Dog Soldiers is is a great action movie that doesn’t care about telling a deep story or establishing compelling characters. It just wants to entertain, and at that, it excels.
